If you are worried about what will happen to your kids if you are detained or deported, you should make a Family Preparedness Plan. We hope that you never have to use your plan, but having one may help reduce the stress of the unexpected.

Please use the link below to access resources from the State of CT on how immigrant families can make any necessary arrangements ahead of time as needed.

The Family Preparedness Plan will help you:

  • Name a standby guardian who can care for their children if they are detained or deported. Please find information regarding Standby Guardianship here: Information and Instructions Designation of a Standby Guardian of A Minor

  • Make sure trusted adults are approved to pick children up from school or daycare.

  • Keep important medical, school, identification, and other documents together and easy for the caregiver to access.

  • Give the standby guardian copies of the forms and ensure they understand the family’s plan.

The Family Preparedness Plan was developed by the Haven Free Clinic Medical Legal Partnership at Yale Law School, in consultation with Connecticut immigration nonprofits and legal experts. While the State of Connecticut supports broad access to trusted resources, this packet does not constitute legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship.

Individuals and families are strongly encouraged to consult with a qualified attorney or legal service provider before relying on or completing any of the forms included in the packet.

You can download the packet here, which also provides translated versions in French, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese
