Working for a Healthy Community: A Message from the Health Director
Winter is here and that means plummeting temperatures, ice and snow storms, and yes, the possibility of power outages. If you use a generator, it is extremely important that it is installed properly to minimize the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
Know the signs of CO poisoning and how to avoid making potentially deadly mistakes. Make sure your home has carbon monoxide detectors—more than 200 residents across Connecticut had to be treated for CO poisoning, 4 of whom died as a result of CO poisoning. Check our website for a great fact sheet on how to avoid CO poisoning.
We continue to give preparedness presentations to schools and civic organizations, spreading the word about how to prepare for emergencies. Take a moment and ask yourself: Are you and your family prepared?
- GET A KIT. Both www.ready.gov and our website have lots of information and links to help you, your family and your neighborhood prepare for all kinds of hazards.
- MAKE A PLAN. When disaster strikes, your family may not be together… so it is important to plan in advance: How will you contact one another? How will you get back together? Where will you meet? And, what will you do in different situations?
- BE INFORMED. Stay tuned to local radio, TV, and websites for news alerts, and always heed evacuation notices.
Residents with special needs face additional challenges in a disaster. Many people in our community depend on electricity and/or oxygen in order to survive. We encourage these residents to sign up for Stratford’s Special Needs Registry. Information in this confidential registry is shared only with Dispatch and it ensures that when these residents call 911, responders will be informed of the special need before they arrive at their home. This Information is also used by emergency planners and will be taken into consideration when responding to Town-wide emergencies.
Our commitment to provide comprehensive public health services to Town residents is steadfast. I am grateful for a dedicated and hardworking staff, responding to a wide range of concerns and issues.
As always, call us with your ideas, concerns or suggestions on how we can better serve the public health at 203-385-4090. We look forward to hearing from you.
