Stratford is the birth place of the American helicopter industry. It was here that Russian immigrant Igor Sikorsky flew the first helicopter. With Sikorsky Aircraft as the largest taxpayer, Stratford has become synonymous with helicopters.

The Office of Economic Development serves as the catalyst for business attracting new businesses; the retention and expansion of existing business. The Office provides support and assistance to businesses and developers through the permitting process.
The Office compiles and maintains statistical data for the Town of Stratford and provides a database of available space for lease and for sale.
The Town of Stratford has 12,904,000 square feet of effective area of commercial, industrial retail and office space. The town has a diverse base of businesses within the community. Major manufacturers like Sikorsky Aircraft (supplying military and commercial helicopters), Emsar (manufacturing pump atomizers), ATP Health and Beauty Care (a manufacturer of cosmetic containers), the Norwalk Company (manufacturing compressors), and, Bridgeport Fittings (a major supplier of electrical fittings) call Stratford home.
