PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the 58th annual observance of a National Day of Prayer occurs today, May 7, 2009, and encourages Americans of every faith to give thanks for our blessings and to pray for each other; and
WHEREAS, in 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer; and
WHEREAS, in 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May; and
WHEREAS, today we celebrate liberty and America’s great tradition of prayer; and
WHEREAS, we ask the citizens of Stratford to give thanks, each according to his or her own beliefs, for the freedoms and blessings we have received and to pray for continued guidance and protection; and
WHEREAS, we stand united together today both as Stratford residents and members of different faiths, encouraging peace, love and understanding;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, James R. Miron, Mayor of the Town of Stratford, do hereby proclaim, Thursday, May 7, 2009 as the
NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER
in Stratford and ask all our citizens to join together in prayer on behalf of all civic leaders and organizations and the community as a whole, that in the spirit of trust, cooperation and good will we may all receive the strength and wisdom necessary to make Stratford an even better place in which to live.
