STRATFORD COMMUNITY SUPPORTS HEART HEALTH – BRAVES THE RAIN

Stratford, Conn. (April 6, 2009) - Over one hundred Stratford residents donated in excess of $2,000 this past Saturday for CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) training, according to Stratford Mayor Jim Miron.

The money was raised during the Town of Stratford and Healthy Stratford Council’s first annual “Step to the Beat” 5K Walk and Fundraiser.

The event culminated the Town’s yearlong campaign to educate and raise awareness for women’s heart health and was part of a competitive grant of $50,000 that the Town of Stratford was awarded last year.

The walk’s primary purpose was to raise awareness about heart disease and motivate community members to get fit. Following the walk was a festival that included food, entertainment and music.

The Town will continue the work started by the Women’s Heart Health grant by its involvement in the 50 Million Pound Challenge, a free nationwide program that aims to have Americans lose weight, eliminate obesity and live healthier lives.

On May 16th, the Town of Stratford will conduct a health walk and festival at Longbrook Park as part of the 50 Million Pound Challenge.  Individuals can sign up and join the Town of Stratford’s team, “Stratford Connecticut is Healthy” at www.50millionpounds.com.

“Being healthy requires constant attention to lifestyle,” said Mayor Miron.  “As Mayor, I will do all I can to ensure that the Town has activities and policies that encourage Stratford residents to live healthy and happy lives and the 50 Million Pound Challenge is a fun and free way to gain the knowledge, tools and support system to living a healthier life.”
